The honest part

Does changing DNS speed up your downloads?

Short answer: it won't raise your speed cap — but it isn't nothing. Here's the real split, without the marketing.

What DNS can do

  • Route you to a closer CDN node for game/system files — sometimes a real speed-up
  • Resolve names faster, so downloads start sooner
  • Get you off a slow or broken ISP resolver
  • Block known phishing/malware hosts (on resolvers that filter)

What DNS can't do

  • Raise your bandwidth above your plan — it carries no download traffic
  • Lower your in-game ping — once connected, DNS is out of the picture
  • Guarantee a result — it depends on your location & ISP
  • Replace testing — the only honest answer is measure it yourself

Client ──▶ Slow ISP DNS (420ms / Wrong Geo-POP) ──▶ Overseas CDN  │  1.1.1.1 / 8.8.8.8 / 9.9.9.11 ──▶ Local Edge POP

Why this happens: Before a single byte downloads, your device asks DNS for the CDN's IP address. If your ISP's resolver times out or lacks EDNS Client Subnet / local peering, the CDN hands you an overseas mirror. Switching resolvers can immediately point you to a closer edge server.

If you actually want faster downloads

The levers that really move it.

DNS

Test No-ECS vs. ECS resolvers (1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.11, 208.67.222.222) and keep the one that's fastest for your target domain.

MTU

Leave it on Automatic on modern consoles. Manual MTU tweaks are mostly cargo-cult.

Rest mode

Let it download in rest mode — consoles give downloads more resources when nothing else runs.

Wired & off-peak

Ethernet over Wi-Fi, and download off-peak — CDN and ISP congestion is often the real cap.

Why this exists
Free·No ads·No tracking·No myths

Born from a free, public-good DNS that was kept running for years — just to help people whose downloads were too slow, right when they'd bought a game and wanted to play. Same spirit here: a clean tool that tells you the truth and asks nothing back.
